It's not just like, Oh, well, let's wing

2

:

it and see where we're going.

3

:

No, if you want a specific level and

you want a specific point in which your

4

:

journey is going to going to grow and

scale, and you're going to put yourself

5

:

in a better position, then you have to

look at it from a holistic, what do I do?

6

:

How do I do it?

7

:

How have.

8

:

Others done it, have I asked

those people how they've done it

9

:

and how am I going to execute it?

10

:

Myself, the talk and paint podcast is

20

:

Hey everybody.

21

:

It's Gabe at the talking paint podcast.

22

:

Welcome back.

23

:

Thank you for listening.

24

:

This podcast is sponsored

by detailing growth.

25

:

com.

26

:

That's detailing.

27

:

Today, I wanted to take a minute and

talk about something that I thought would

28

:

hopefully help some people just kind

of maybe realize that they're a part of

29

:

their, where they're at in their journey

when it comes to pain protection film.

30

:

And I've worked with shops up and down

both coasts across the country, and there

31

:

seems to be a tier of shop that is, dare

I say it's self imposed tiering, right?

32

:

from the shop itself and also just

from what industry experts expect

33

:

from a paint protection film shop.

34

:

So there are a few different ways

that you can approach implementing

35

:

PPF in your business and there

are different types of businesses

36

:

for PPF across the country here.

37

:

So they've kind of been broken

down into five different levels and

38

:

that's what this podcast is today,

to talk about what those levels are.

39

:

This is the first, this is what we call

level zero or starting from Challenges

40

:

they face is they're afraid of investing

in Getting a plotter and having

41

:

limited skills and low output quality.

42

:

Valid points, right?

43

:

This is gonna definitely be

your starting point if you're

44

:

thinking about getting into film.

45

:

Do I buy a plotter?

46

:

Do I not buy a plotter?

47

:

Do I go to training?

48

:

Do I not go to training?

49

:

How do I make sure that I give

quality and value for my clients?

50

:

My answer to that is of course,

maybe skip the plotter first,

51

:

get yourself some training.

52

:

At the bare minimum, put

your hands on the film.

53

:

Buy a roll of film.

54

:

You can buy film online or from a

number of other film manufacturers

55

:

and distributors here in the industry.

56

:

You can get your hands on

something from like Global or

57

:

whatever it is for pretty cheap.

58

:

And all you got to do is start

playing with it and like you're doing

59

:

headlights, you're doing partial hoods,

you might do some mirrors, some door

60

:

edges, some rockers, small stuff.

61

:

You can get your hands wet,

so to speak, not dirty because

62

:

dirty hands and PPF don't mix.

63

:

You want to get your hands wet.

64

:

You can dabble in this

and you can grow into PPF.

65

:

You don't need to jump in

with a 10, 000 investment.

66

:

You can jump in with just the

basics, squeegees, knife, heat gun.

67

:

Just take your time and be careful.

68

:

What we consider level one shop, or we

could call you a plotter pioneer, is you

69

:

got yourself a plotter, you're learning

software, you're cutting patterns out

70

:

on that software, you may not really

understand where your pricing is,

71

:

you've got high competition, or you've

got competitors, and you don't really

72

:

have super high confidence in yourself.

73

:

So that's also a normal stage

in your progression path.

74

:

So you want to get your ethos

and why you're better and

75

:

why you're different defined.

76

:

You want to continue to work on your

film handling, work on your quality,

77

:

make sure you've got the basics down.

78

:

Just keep going.

79

:

Keep putting the reps in and

just be sure that it makes sense

80

:

for you and that you're not just

burning up film left and right.

81

:

This is also a point where if

you've got the capital to acquire

82

:

a plotter, you probably should have

had the capital to go to training.

83

:

So training is a fundamental

important part of growing and

84

:

scaling up in paint protection film.

85

:

Because training that's available

online, a level of information that's

86

:

available online to like understand

what paint protection film does and

87

:

doesn't do and the nuances of it.

88

:

It's very scattered with the exception

of Autofilm Mastery with Mike Norn.

89

:

You can purchase that program

from them and don't get me wrong.

90

:

You get a decent sense of what film is

and how to handle it and the different

91

:

components, but there's nothing

that's going to be in person training.

92

:

And if I had to guess where you should

go for training, I would definitely say.

93

:

Hit up Jamie Werner at Equip Academy.

94

:

You could do manufacturer based

training like Ceramic Pro or X Bell.

95

:

Autobahn has a decent training

program from what I've seen.

96

:

There's training programs from

different film manufacturers.

97

:

Mike Noring has a training that he does

in house, although very, very expensive.

98

:

And I don't think he does

it very much anymore.

99

:

Only for people that

really, really want it.

100

:

And, truth be told, where you go for

training can often decide and set you up.

101

:

For the level of speed and which you are

going to ramp through these shop stages.

102

:

So pick the right training facility

and one that matches the most

103

:

for you and your trajectory.

104

:

Then you kind of jump

up to a level two shop.

105

:

This is what we call

like solid foundation.

106

:

You've got basics down.

107

:

You're continuing to use

computer cut software.

108

:

You're adjusting kits in the software.

109

:

You might bulk a hood.

110

:

You might bulk headlights.

111

:

You've got a solid understanding

of where your costs are in terms of

112

:

like, how much you're spending on

film per job, how long it's taking.

113

:

Jobs are probably still taking too long at

this stage because you're still learning.

114

:

You're having an issue with

setting customer expectations.

115

:

You might have imperfections in your

installs that are driving you crazy.

116

:

So this is all again, a part of the

growth path and there are things here

117

:

that every shop at some point experiences.

118

:

And we step up here, what

we call level three, you.

119

:

Probably got a pretty

solid ground to stand on.

120

:

You're an established

expert shop in the area.

121

:

You have good solid knife skills.

122

:

You can bulk most work, although you're

probably still leaning on computer

123

:

cut business on computer cut patterns.

124

:

You're mixing installation techniques

in bulk and custom and hybrid.

125

:

You probably got a really strong market

position and you've got your pricing

126

:

dialed in and you've got a solid ethos

as to why people should choose you.

127

:

So, you know, this is kind of the scale.

128

:

At which most shops are going to

start seeing positive return on

129

:

investment into paint protection film.

130

:

And this is usually after about

a year and a half to doing PPF.

131

:

This is kind of where you're at.

132

:

Usually about a year to a year and a half.

133

:

This is just a level four shop.

134

:

This is what we're going

to call Titan status.

135

:

This is going to be where You are the

known go to for paint protection film in

136

:

your area and for doing it right at the

highest tier, highest quality possible.

137

:

You have a team of installers

that have exceptional skills.

138

:

You have a strong brand reputation.

139

:

You've got solid financial

extraction happening from your

140

:

paint protection film department.

141

:

You have set yourself

apart from everybody else.

142

:

You've got dedication.

143

:

You've got team building

going on all the time.

144

:

You've got optimization in your process.

145

:

You've got all these things dialed in.

146

:

And you.

147

:

You are probably, you know, net positive

on paint protection film at this point.

148

:

And this isn't the top either.

149

:

There is one level above this, and

that's level five protective only shops.

150

:

Meaning this is a shop that only does

film, and that's its primary offering

151

:

is film, automotive protection film.

152

:

This is going to be your AFS Houston's,

your protective film solutions.

153

:

Ryan Townsley.

154

:

It's going to be shops

like ours, ceramic paint.

155

:

It's gonna be your

Menards Premium Detailing.

156

:

It's gonna be these shops

that primarily focus on film.

157

:

What they do, day in and day out,

is mainly paint protection film.

158

:

And it takes a while to get there.

159

:

You gotta really, really make sure

that you're structuring your business

160

:

appropriately for that level.

161

:

Because, You don't just jump straight

in and you don't go into being a

162

:

protective only type of business without

getting through the rest of them.

163

:

First, it takes time, effort, and money.

164

:

Three years, usually minimum

to even get to that point where

165

:

you're starting to figure that out.

166

:

And truthfully, the growth record

based upon what you envision for

167

:

yourself can be much longer than that.

168

:

You could be having to put five

years into this before you get there.

169

:

You could be a two years,

you could be a three years.

170

:

It all depends on your level of

commitment to putting your business

171

:

where you want it to be and using the

tools available to steer and guide you.

172

:

guide the business towards that.

173

:

If you want that for your

business, you need to create

174

:

a plan and execute the plan.

175

:

It's not just like, Oh, well let's

wing it and see where we're going.

176

:

No.

177

:

If you want a specific level and you

want a specific point in which your

178

:

journey is going to grow and scale, and

you're going to put yourself in a better

179

:

position, then you have to look at it

from a holistic, holistic perspective.

180

:

What do I do?

181

:

How do I do it?

182

:

How have others done it?

183

:

Have I asked those people how

they've done it and how am I

184

:

going to execute it myself?

185

:

And it's with all of that information

that you can start to put together a

186

:

solid plan to grow and to put yourself

into these different shop tiers.

187

:

And at the end of the day, my takeaway

message is that it doesn't matter

188

:

where you're at in film and it

doesn't matter where you've started.

189

:

As long as you start, As long

as you move through progression

190

:

and you move through with pace.

191

:

And you understand your pacing

192

:

real quick.

193

:
